Yellow Jackets downed by Lincoln Memorial in close game, 1-0

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The West Virginia State University women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season, 1-0, on the road to Lincoln Memorial. The match looked like it would be played to a draw from the beginning, but the Railsplitters managed to find a late winner in the end.

WVSU drops to 1-1 on the season with the loss while LMU improves to 2-0-1 overall with the win.

Senior forward Brooklyn Pritt was West Virginia State's best attacking threat with a team-high four shots and two shots on goal. Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Laura Galindo played the full 90 minutes and made four saves despite allowing the one goal in the contest.

The first half was a dead stalemate with both sides playing out from the back and holding onto possession for long stretches. Each team only had one shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

Pritt's shot in the ninth minute was directed at the bottom right corner of goal only to be saved by the opposing keeper. Galindo then came up with a big save in the 23rd minute when she kept out a shot headed for the top center part of the goal.

Lincoln Memorial was more aggressive on the attack in the second half. The Yellow Jackets defended well until LMU finally found the breakthrough goal.

Galindo rushed off her line to make a spectacular save against the breakaway attacker only for the deflection to wind up right back at the forward's feet. The game winner for the Railsplitters was then scored in the 76th minute with a chip into the bottom left corner of the net.

West Virginia State went on an all-out attack in the closing minutes of the match to no avail. A shot was taken by WVSU with five minutes to go that was pushed wide right and ended up being the best chance for the Yellow Jackets to earn a draw.

The Railsplitters committed 11 fouls on the day compared to just five by the more disciplined Yellow Jackets.

West Virginia State returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15 with the conference opener against Concord. The home contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
