BECKLEY, W.VA. – West Virginia State Baseball continues to rally in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, trumping Concord 9-3 and forcing an "if necessary" game Sunday in the title game at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
WVSU improves to 31-8 on the season, while Concord, who entered Sunday undefeated in the MEC Tournament, slips to 18-22.
The two will face off in the finale at 4:00 p.m., with live stats and video provided.
The Yellow Jackets scored first but played catchup throughout the contest before back-to-back jacks in the seventh gave State some momentum. The heroes, graduate student
Matt Harrison and senior
Andrew Stone, each went yard and combined for a 5-for-10 performance. Harrison registered three hits, scored three times and drove in three, while senior
Matthew Kline also tallied three RBI. He, junior
Michael Stone, and graduate student
Christopher Jordan all also recorded two hits apiece in the contest. Michael and Jordan also scored two runs each.
All-MEC Second Team selection
Jacob Bradley earned the win, moving to 7-2 on the season. He tossed six innings of relief, fanning six and allowing no earned runs while scattering two walks. All-MEC First Team selection
Ethan Lauchart picked up the three-inning save, his first of the year. Lauchart struck out four.
State wasted no time getting on the board, going up 1-0 in the opening frame after third baseman
Christopher Jordan singled down the left field line, moved to second on a single to center field from Harrison, and scored on a wild pitch.
The lead was short lived, as Concord took advantage of back-to-back walks and then singled back up the middle to take a 2-1 lead. They added cushion in the second off a throwing error from a failed pickoff attempt and a double, putting the Yellow Jackets down a pair of runs.
The score remained until the sixth, when the Yellow Jackets evened things up once again courtesy of Jordan, Harrison, and the red-hot Kline. Kline has led State in postseason hitting, carrying a .364 tournament clip into Sunday.
Jordan booked it down to first for a bunt single, and then advanced to second on a long single to left field from Harrison. Both moved up 90 feet on a passed ball, and came home on a single to deep center from Kline to make the score three all.
Concord threatened at the bottom of that frame, getting two men on, but back-to-back Ks from reliever
Jacob Bradley, combined with a groundout stifled the threat.
State exploded in the seventh, as Harrison blasted his league-leading 13
th long ball of the year, and Kline followed suit the next at bat to give the Yellow Jackets a three-run advantage at 7-3.
The Yellow Jackets added more cushion in the ninth, when
Michael Stone connected for an infield single and came home on a single to center field from his brother, and then Harrison topped it off after reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring on a double from Kline.
