INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team split a doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan at Lady Jackets Field on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets triumphed in the first game, 8-3, before suffering defeat in the second game, 5-1.

Game 1: WVSU 8, WVWC 3, Final/7
- Junior Kasey Murphy (6-4) had a solid outing in the circle. She gave up five hits and two earned runs in seven innings pitched while striking out three batters.
- Senior Paige Scruggs went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. She drove in four runs and scored once.
- Junior Emma Ruth hit her fourth homerun of the season to give WVSU the offensive spark that it needed in the fourth inning.

The Bobcats loaded the bases in the top of the first, but were only able to score one run, 1-0. They tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth with a 2-RBI triple, 3-0. In the next half inning, Scruggs fouled off multiple pitches and drew a walk to wear down the pitcher. Ruth then launched a bomb over the left field fence to put West Virginia State on the scoreboard, 2-0. The Yellow Jackets hit through the order in the bottom of the fourth with two runs scoring on
Danielle Lebsock's double and three runs coming in on Scruggs' double in her second at bat of the inning, 7-3. WVSU scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single from Scruggs, 8-3. Murphy was able to hold West Virginia Wesleyan scoreless after being given the lead.
Game 2: WVWC 5, WVSU 1, Final/7
- West Virginia Wesleyan's Abigail O'Shields (4-2) allowed just four hits in a complete game performance.
- Senior Emily Moore entered the game in the top of the sixth and gave up one hit, with no runs allowed, in two innings pitched.
- West Virginia State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but only managed to score one run before the final out.

WVWC scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning without a response from WVSU, 5-0. A single in the first inning and another single in the third inning were the only hits allowed by O'Shields in the first six innings. West Virginia State finally threatened the lead in the bottom of the seventh.
Madison Rafuson and
Lindsey Phares both singled to start off the half inning. With two outs and two on base, two consecutive walks scored a run, 5-1. The two-out rally ended there with the next batter striking out.
