BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The West Virginia State University softball team made the 200-mile trek south to King University for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader after playing a twinbill at home the day prior. The Yellow Jackets dropped the first game, 10-2, before facing another defeat in the second, 12-5.
Postgame Records
WVSU: 1-5
KU: 7-3
Game 1: KU 10, WVSU 2, Final/5
- Freshman pitcher Autumn Thompson went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Fifth year shortstop Shian Meeks drove in both runs scored by WVSU with a double.
- King's Nickole Counts allowed four hits in five innings pitched.
- The eight-run rule was looming since the bottom of the first when seven runs were picked up by the Tornado.
Quick Recap
A seven-run bottom of the first put pressure on the Yellow Jackets to keep the game from ending early due to the eight-run rule (7-0). The matter was made worse when King tacked on two runs in the fourth inning (9-0). With hopes of extending the contest, West Virginia State picked up two runs in the top of the fifth (9-2). Thompson hit a leadoff double before
Danielle Lebsock reached base on a throwing error. Meeks then stepped up to the plate and ripped a double into right center to clear the bases. In the next half inning, the Tornado scored the one run needed to invoke the eight-run rule.
Game 2: KU 12, WVSU 5, Final/7
- Five Yellow Jackets had two or more hits. Freshman second baseman Lindsey Phares went 3-for-4 with a homerun, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored.
- Junior pitcher Emilee Walker threw three innings of relief and held the Tornado to five hits and two runs.
- WVSU collected 12 hits as a team, compared to 13 by King. Seven extra base hits by the Tornado, compared to two by West Virginia State, resulted in the score differential.
Quick Recap
West Virginia State took a two-run lead in the top of the first (2-0). A double followed up by a single in the first three at bats created a predicament for King's starting pitcher. Both Phares and Paige Scurggs scored after reaching base while two baserunners were left on at the end of the half inning. The lead was then erased in the bottom of the first (2-2). The Tornado had a huge eight-run third inning (10-2). Phares belted a three-run homerun over the left field fence in the fourth to ensure that the game would go a full seven innings (10-5). King scored its last two runs in the fifth (12-5). Neither team was able to round the bases in the final two innings.
