FROSTBURG, MD. – West Virginia State Baseball's six-game conference winning streak was snapped Monday at Bob Wells Field, as the Yellow Jackets split their two-game series with Mountain East Conference foe Frostburg State (4-10, 2-4 MEC) by scores of 6-4 and 11-1.Â
The Yellow Jackets move to 10-4 on the season and 6-1 in MEC action.Â
Senior
Andrew Stone doubled twice on the day as part of three total hits with two runs, graduate student
Matt Harrison tallied three RBI in the nightcap, and seniors
Matthew Kline and
Austin Martin each scored three times in Frostburg.Â
GAME 1: FROSTBURG STATE 6, WVSU 4
A hit-by-pitch, a pair of singles, and a sacrifice fly put the Bobcats on the board early, plating three runs in the first.Â
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time responding, scoring four times in the top of the second. Infielder
Christopher Jordan led off the frame with a double, scoring on the next at-bat on a single from Martin. He then scored after advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a Frostburg error. Catcher
Andrew Massey, who reached on the error, came home on a single from shortstop
Brett Christian, who plated WVSU's final run of the inning.Â
The lead was short lived, as the Bobcats went back on top with two runs in the bottom half of the second thanks to a two-run homer, and then added an insurance run in the sixth off a fielder's choice.Â
GAME 2: WVSU 11, FROSTBURG STATE 1
The Yellow Jacket bats cracked early and often to start the nightcap, as State scored nine runs to set the tone for the finale.Â
Stone doubled to lead off the contest, advanced to third after an error allowed Kline to reach, and both came home from heavy hitter Harrison, who smacked his first triple of the year.Â
Harrison came home on a single from Martin; Jordan, who boarded earlier via hit-by-pitch, scored on a
Jared Hunt single, and Martin plated the Yellow Jackets' fifth run of the frame on a fielder's choice from Christian.Â
Batting around the order, four consecutive walks awarded WVSU with four more runs to end the inning with a 9-0 advantage.Â
Another single from Hunt in the fourth gave the Yellow Jackets another run, and they plated their final run in the fifth as Kline scored on a single from Jordan.Â
Hunt finished the game with two hits and a pair of RBI.
Freshman
Chase Norris earned his first collegiate victory, tallying just one hit and a strikeout in an inning of work.Â
