FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team reclaimed its winning record with a 113-81 road victory at Frostburg State on Wednesday night.
WVSU jumps to 5-4 in the Mountain East Conference with the win while FSU falls to 2-7 with the loss.
Junior
Charity Shears led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 25 points. Fellow junior
Kalia Cunningham was not far off with a career-high 21 points. She made all eight of her shot attempts. Sophomore
Shelby Harmeyer also set a new career-high with 17 points. She shot 5-of-8 from behind the arc.
Destiny Fields added 12 points to score in double-figures while
Hannah Shriver dished out 10 assists to aid the team's scoring effort. Â
The Yellow Jackets were quick to force their tempo on the Bobcats in the first quarter. Before Frostburg State was able to react, West Virginia State seized an 11-point lead after eight minutes, 21-10. In the last two minutes of the first quarter, the Bobcats were able to catch their collective breath and play catch up. West Virginia State still managed to hang on to an eight-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 31-23.
In the second quarter, West Virginia State's pace of play overwhelmed Frostburg State. The Yellow Jackets made the most of their opportunities to score by connecting on 53 percent of their shots and shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range. They were able to increase their lead to 17 points by halftime, 59-42.
WVSU kept up the pressure following the break. The Yellow Jackets led by 18 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, 69-51. Over the next minute-and-a-half, West Virginia State scored 11 unanswered to go way in front, 80-51. Frostburg State went on a 12-7 run to finish the third period and barely put a dent in the large deficit. WVSU was left with a 24-point cushion to defend in the fourth quarter, 87-63.
The Yellow Jackets did not take their lead for granted in the final period. They outscored the Bobcats, 26-18, to achieve an impressive 32-point margin of victory.
WVSU forced 27 turnovers, including 20 steals, and shot 48 percent from the floor to win comfortably.
West Virginia State will return to Institute for their next game versus Fairmont State on Saturday, Feb. 6. The tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
