West Virginia State rolls past West Virginia Wesleyan, 114-69

INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team picked up their seventh win of the season against West Virginia Wesleyan, 114-69, on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.

West Virginia State improves to 7-6 in the Mountain East Conference with the win while West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 3-10 in the MEC with the loss.

Four Yellow Jackets were able to score in double-digits. Junior guard Alana Kramer led the way with 18 points. Junior guards Charity Shears and Peyton Shears helped out by scoring 15 points each. Sophomore guard Alexis Hall also tallied 11 points on the night. Fellow sophomore Destiny Fields grabbed a game-high 10 boards.

Most of the first quarter was a fast back-and-forth battle. Both teams were flying up and down the court, causing turnovers, and taking shots every chance they got. It wasn't until the final minute of the period where there was any separation. In the last minute of the quarter, WVSU made a few quick layups to separate themselves. WVSU held a solid lead at the end of the quarter, 23-15.

The momentum from the end of the first quarter carried over in a big way for the Yellow Jackets in the second period. WVSU came out firing, shooting a scorching 57 percent, and jumped out to a commanding 20-point lead by the halfway point of the period. From then on, the Yellow Jackets never looked back. They kept their foot on the gas for the remainder of the half and went into the locker room with a demanding 51-28 lead.

West Virginia State was able to keep up the dominating performance from the first half in the third quarter. WVSU never seemed to let loose in the quarter and made four three-pointers to help extended their lead. The Yellow Jackets went into the final period of play with a substantial near 40-point lead, 81-46.

The final period of play was played much closer than the previous two quarters. Wesleyan was able to finally find a rhythm and slow down the onslaught from WVSU. The lead held by the Yellow Jackets proved to be just too overwhelming, though, as West Virginia State was able to cruise to the victory.

The Yellow Jackets were able to light it up from outside. As a team, WVSU made 13 three-pointers in the game. Peyton Shears was the main contributor from three-point range with four three-pointers.

The Yellow Jackets will hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 24 as they travel to Davis & Elkins. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
