ELKINS, W. Va. – The West Virginia State women's basketball team traveled to Davis & Elkins and picked up a win, 95-70, on Wednesday night. Five Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits on the way to the victory.
WVSU improves to 8-6 in the Mountain East Conference with the win while the Senators fall to 2-12 in the MEC with the loss.
Sophomore Destiny Fields led the way for West Virginia State by racking up 19 points and bringing down eight rebounds. Juniors Alana Kramer (16 points) and Kalia Cunningham (13 points) also helped out. Sophomore Hannah Shriver dished out a team-high eight assists on the night.
The first half on the first period was a close back-and-forth battle. Both teams were attempting to make runs but they were being shut down quickly by the other side. That held true until the around the four-and-a-half minute mark in the period. WVSU started catching fire when jumpers from Kalia Cunningham and Alexis Hall hit the target. From then on, the Yellow Jackets controlled the rest of the quarter but never seemed to get much separation. West Virginia State held the lead, 24-18, going into the second.
The small momentum that the Yellow Jackets had grew quickly in the second quarter. Early in the quarter, WVSU was able to cause turnovers and make a couple three-pointers to increase the lead. By the halfway point of the quarter, West Virginia State had a commanding 20-point lead. From that point on, the quarter was played somewhat close. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets were able to coast to a 53-30 advantage going into the break.
The third quarter was a fast-paced dog fight. No team had a distinct advantage for the entire period. Davis & Elkins was subsequently unable to claw its way back into the game. The Yellow Jackets had an answer for everything that the Senators threw at them. West Virginia State went on to end the third quarter with a comfortable lead, 80-49.
The final period of play was almost a mirror image of the third. Both teams were going at each other, flying up and down the floor. However, the Yellow Jackets large lead proved too overwhelming for Davis & Elkins as WVSU coasted to the victory.
Like we have seen so many times before, West Virginia State was able to dominate in the turnover category. WVSU was able to turn over the Senators 30 times in the game compared to the Yellow Jackets' 12 turnovers.
West Virginia State will host its final game of the season against crosstown rival Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
With Concord's (8-6) loss to West Virginia Wesleyan tonight, the Yellow Jackets can skip the first round of the MEC Championship if they beat UC and the Mountain Lions lose to Glenville State on Saturday.
