INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team came up short, 104-93, against Concord on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. Five Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits despite the outcome of the game.
WVSU falls to 6-6 in the Mountain East Conference with the loss while the Mountain Lions improve to 7-5 in the MEC with the win.
Junior guard Payton Shears led the way for the Yellow Jackets with a season-high 17 points. Sophomore Destiny Fields made her contribution with 14 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Shriver dished out a team-high seven assists as the main distributor on the night.
The first quarter of play was a tight shootout between both teams. There wasn't much separation between the teams until Concord went on a small run just after the halfway point of the period. The Mountain Lions scored eight unanswered points before a three-pointer by Shelby Harmeyer sparked a comeback by the Yellow Jackets. WVSU fought back into the lead by the end of the quarter, 29-26.
Early in the second quarter, Concord was able to close the gap and get back into the game. From the 7:12 mark of the period all the way until the last minute-and-a-half, it was the same back and forth action seen in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets were then able to string together a small run and end the half strong. WVSU went into the break up by four, 56-52.
Most of the third quarter was controlled by the Yellow Jackets. No matter how hard Concord tried, nothing was fazing WVSU. That stayed true until the last couple minutes of the period. The Mountain Lions were able to use their height against the Yellow Jackets in the last two minutes of the quarter as they took the lead with their rebounding and second-chance points. The Mountain Lions led, 79-74, going into the fourth.
The final period of play was completely controlled by the Mountain Lions. The Yellow Jackets threw everything they had at them but the late effort was futile. WVSU had to start fouling to try to stay in the game which allowed Concord to coast to the victory.
The Yellow Jackets were able to stay in the game until the end with solid defensive play. The Yellow Jackets scored 31 of their points off of turnovers and fast break layups compared to Concord's 24.
The Yellow jackets will remain at home for their next game on Saturday, Feb. 20 as they host West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
