Yellow Jackets Top Pioneers Tuesday 3-0

INSTITUTE, W.VA. – West Virginia State Volleyball continued its domination through the Mountain East Conference, registering their 11th sweep of league play Tuesday, taking down Glenville State in straight sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) in Walker Convocation Center.

The Yellow Jackets move to 24-3 on the season and 12-1 in the MEC and have now won 17 consecutive sets.

The senior quartet of Jenna Dufresne, Grace Martin, Gabrielle Bullock, and J'Lana Stone continued to impress in their final campaigns, as the first three led the way with nine kills and Stone added seven. Martin hit at a stellar .643 hitting efficiency and add four blocks, while Stone and Bullock were also impressive with .462 and .421 clips, respectively. Stone also tallied three rejections while Bullock added two.

Sophomore Alex Darby turned in a career-high performance with seven service aces, including four in a row. She added 12 digs during the match. Junior Rachelle Madison led the way with 13, and sophomore Kiersten Eggleton dished out 22 assists.

"We're hard to deal with right now," head coach Kris Kern said. "Our blocking and defense is creating offense. Grace and J'Lana are playing well and our two young setters are spreading the love. I'm excited at the growth of our setters."

West Virginia State rushed out to 6-0 lead in the first set before the Pioneers scored their first point of the match. The momentum did not fade and Glenville State was forced to call a timeout when the score reached 14-5 in favor of WVSU.

The play evened out after GSC had time to regroup, but WVSU was already comfortably on its way to claiming the opening set. Bullock finished off the first set with back-to-back kills, 25-14.

The second frame was played to a five-apiece deadlock in the early stages. The Yellow Jackets tried to shake off the pesky Pioneers as the set progressed, but Glenville State kept hanging on. The score was tied up again at 11 all before West Virginia State was finally able to pull away. WVSU went on a 14-3 run to close out the set in a sequence that featured three kills from Stone.

The second set was a feeling of déjà vu from the opening stanza, as Bullock turned in back-to-back slams yet again, bringing the score line to a familiar 25-14.

West Virginia State jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set before Glenville State was given a chance to react. The Pioneers inched back to within two points of the mighty Yellow Jackets, 12-10, but did not come any closer. WVSU then went on a 10-point streak that was capped off by four consecutive service aces from Darby at 22-10. Stone smashed the match-clinching kill, 25-11.
