Yellow Jackets Sweep Bobcats on the Road, 3-0

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The West Virginia State Volleyball team earned a division championship in the Mountain East Conference while registering its 12th sweep in league play on Friday, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan College in straight sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-10) at the Rockefeller Center.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 25-3 on the season and 13-1 in the MEC. It was the 18th consecutive set won by West Virginia State.

Jenna Dufresne led the Yellow Jackets with a double-double with her 11 kills and 10 digs in the match. She also had a .563 attack percentage during the game. Kiersten Eggleton had 20 assists while also logging a service ace with Peri Martin. Gabrielle Bullock had 10 kills for WVSU while Alex Darby had a game-high 11 digs.

West Virginia State opened the match with a 6-2 run and expanded that lead to 14-6 before West Virginia Wesleyan called a timeout after a Gabrielle Bullock kill. WVW came back to cut its deficit to 15-8, but a 4-0 run by the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to double digits, 19-8.

The Bobcats came back with a 4-1 run of their own to bring themselves within eight, 20-12. The Yellow Jackets regrouped to put the score at 23-13 before a 4-1 run gave West Virginia Wesleyan hope while cutting its deficit down to seven, 24-17, before a service error ended the threat to secure the first set win for WVSU.

Both teams were tied at 4-4 to start the second set before the Bobcats took a 5-4 lead on a service ace. West Virginia State responded with an 8-1 run to take control of the set to eventually cruise to a 25-13 win to move to 2-0.

The final set was more of the same as the Yellow Jackets began with a 5-0 run and moved on to an 8-2 advantage. The lead swelled to as large as 23-8 as WVSU concluded the sweep with a 25-10 win.
