BECKLEY, W.Va. – The West Virginia State womens soccer team secured a 2-2 draw against No. 16 Concord University Mountain Lions, on Sunday at the Paul Cline YMCA Soccer Complex. The Yellow Jackets fell behind 2-0 in the 65
th minute, but battled back thanks to goals from
Lainey Armistead and
Fran Soares-Cupertino.
WVSU moved to 5-2-1 on the season, 4-1-1 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord's record goes to 8-0-1, 6-0-1 in the MEC.
The match looked from the beginning like it was going to be all Concord when Rachel Bell put away a Mountain Lion corner kick in the fourth minute of the match to put the Mountain Lions up 1-0. Most of the half was spent in the defensive midfield for the Yellow Jackets with their only real opportunity of the first half coming in the 22
nd minute when Soares-Cupertino hit
Karem Rodrigues as she split defenders about 40 yards away from goal. Rodrigues took the pass and raced down the field, but the shot went right into the waiting arms of Concord's goalkeeper Laura Marsh. Neither team would register another shot on target, but the Mountain Lions took two more shots before halftime.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions poured it on and took 5 shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half. In the 65
th minute, The Yellow Jackets surrendered another corner kick and Anna Davis received it from Michelle Brogden, deflected off of Leah Fleming and scored to put Concord up 2-0. The Yellow Jackets counterattack soon began to become more effective. Alsina picked off a clear from Marsh and passed it to Soares-Cupertino who was fouled about 35 yards away from goal right in the middle of the field. Her shot went right into Marsh's hands, but nobody was there to clean up the rebound and it was cleared away by the Concord defense.
In the 83
rd minute Galindo picked up a cross meant for the Concord attack. Soares-Cupertino dropped it to
Naomi Waithira who crossed it to Armistead going down the left side. Armistead took a tough angle shot around 12 yards from goal just inside the goal line and scored her first of the season to pull WVSU to within one goal. A little over a minute later Waithira would get an open look at goal, but Marsh got enough air under her to make the save.
Delaney Day intercepted the clear just seconds later and played it up for Soares-Cupertino. The Concord defender misplayed it and the ball went right to the waiting foot of Soares-Cupertino who fired it past Marsh in the goal for her fifth of the season and tied it up, causing the Yellow Jacket bench to erupt.
The Yellow Jackets still had work to do when the fulltime whistle blew. Each team got one more shot in the first 10 minute period. Neither team recorded a shot on goal in the second overtime, but Concord did have two shots blocked. With just 15 seconds to go, Concord got yet another corner kick, but it was safely cleared away to secure the draw.
Concord has given up just four goals to opponents all season, three of those goals were scored by WVSU players, the only goals scored by MEC opponents against the Mountain Lions. The other goal was by Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Chowan University.
The draw also snapped a four match shutout streak for the Mountain Lions. The last goal scored on Concord was on September 15
th in the first meeting with WVSU.
Soares-Cupertino took four shots for the Yellow Jackets, two on target, and scored once. Rodrigues had two shots, both on target. Armistead took one shot and scored on it. Galindo played all 110 minutes and had three saves. For Concord, Leah Foster took five shots, only one was on target. Bell and Davis each had one shot and scored.
The Yellow Jackets return to the Shawnee Sports Complex on Wednesday, October 6
th for a 6 pm meeting with Glenville State College. WVSU won their previous meeting 3-0 in Glenville.
