West Virginia State blows out Alderson Broaddus, 45-13

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University football team never looked in doubt on its way to a resounding 45-13 win over Alderson Broaddus at UC Stadium at Laidley Field on Saturday night.

WVSU improves to 2-3 overall, 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference with the victory. Meanwhile, AB remains winless at 0-5 on the season, 0-4 in the MEC with the defeat.

Freshman running back Malik Newton rushed for over 100 yards for the second time this season. He had 17 carries for 140 yards (8.2 yards per carry) and a season-high two touchdowns. Fifth-year fullback Dant'e Jones added two touchdowns of his own with 77 yards rushing for the game.

Junior quarterback Donovan Riddick made no mistakes with 13 completions on 20 attempts for a career-high 268 passing yards with two touchdowns. Senior wide receivers Keedrick Cunningham and Tyrone Lyte were the main beneficiaries as each posted over 90 receiving yards and one touchdown. Cunningham's 99 receiving yards was the best of his career.

Two interceptions were made by the WVSU defense. Junior defensive back Christian Thompson made his first interception of the season and second of his career while sophomore defensive lineman Corlyn Witcher came down with a pick on a batted pass.Sophomore linebacker AJ Joyce led his team in tackles with seven, including six solo tackles and a sack, and forced a fumble.

State impressed in the first half, taking a 24-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. 24 points was the most for the Yellow Jackets in the first half this season and was already the second-highest margin for the squad on the season.

Sluggish in their opening drive, the Yellow Jackets moved just 18 yards on six plays. Frosh Malik Newton took three consecutive runs, rushing for 14 yards, but a false start forced State and fellow rookie Brennen Schmitt to punt to the AB 17-yard line.

The Battlers fared no better, performing a near identical series in their first possession, a six-play, 17-yard drive that ended with an out-of-bounds punt on the WVSU 45.

State's second possession featured fullback Dant'e Jones as the star. In a six-play, 55-yard drive, Jones was responsible for all 55 yards and found the end zone for the black and gold for his third touchdown of the year.

The Yellow Jacket defense continued to pressure AB and forced the Battlers to burn a timeout after two incomplete passes, a penalty, and a pair of sacks—with Evan Blackwell on the solo takedown to end the Battlers' drive, and the duo of Corlyn Witcher and Mikael Lipscomb setting the tempo on the first play of the drive.

State needed just three plays and just over a minute to double their lead as the first quarter came to a close. After a short one-yard connection from quarterback Donovan Riddick to sophomore wide receiver Barry Hill, Newton again found the ball, rushing for 25 yards to reach the Battler 12, and then dashed into the end zone for his first score of the contest.

AB opened the second quarter on a long drive for a touchdown, using a 10-play sequence on 75 yards to get onto the scoreboard, but the seven-point  margin was short-lived, as State responded on their opening drive of the frame to go up 20-7.

Riddick found Hill again, this time for 45 yards, to set State up on the AB 30. A loss of two yards did not prove to be a setback, as Riddick then connected with Newton for a 10-yard pass. Newton added five yards on a carry for a WVSU first down, setting up Riddick for a 17-yard launch to the awaiting arms of veteran Keedrick Cunningham in the end zone.

Graduate student Martin Ahlstroem was flawless in all three extra points, as well as a 28-yard field goal to end the half.

Cunningham did most of the work on a 73-yard pass completion from Riddick on West Virginia State's first offensive possession of the second half. The long strike brought the Yellow Jackets down to the seven yard line. Dant'e Jones ended up punching the ball into the endzone from two yards out, 31-7.

On West Virginia State's next offensive possession, Riddick found Lyte on a deep route for a 76-yard touchdown reception, 38-7. Not long after that score, the Yellow Jackets recovered a fumble near midfield to set up their last scoring drive. Newton broke off a 30-yard rush before he broke the plane from two yards out on the next play, 45-7.

The Yellow Jackets brought that 45-7 lead into the fourth quarter. The Battlers were able to score at the beginning of the fourth with a nine-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown and a missed point after try, 45-13. WVSU proceeded to run the clock out for the remainder of the final quarter while preventing AB from scoring again.

West Virginia State's 543 yards of total offense was a season-high. The 299 yards that the WVSU defense held Alderson Broaddus to was a season-low for the unit.

The Yellow Jackets will head to West Virginia Wesleyan next on Saturday, Oct. 9th. The kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
