Yellow Jackets defeated by Glenville State, 126-82

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team played host to Glenville State College on Thursday night and was defeated, 126-82.

WVSU falls to 0-1 on the season, 0-1 in the MEC with the loss. Glenville State will go up to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win.

Sophomore Shelby Harmeyer led the way for West Virginia State with 12 points and eight rebounds on the night. Junior Charity Shears also scored in double-digits with 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets and the Pioneers played the first quarter tight. Scoring was pouring in from both sides in the early going. It wasn't until a couple transition layups and a three-pointer created some separation for Glenville State. GSC went into the first quarter break up by 10 points, 27-17.

Glenville State started out the second quarter on a 13-5 run. West Virginia State, staying true to their selves, fought back in the second half of the period. The Yellow Jackets were able to close the gap with the help of some three-pointers from Hannah Shriver and Alana Kramer. GSC went into the half with the lead, 59-42.

WVSU played tough in the third, but Glenville State built momentum early in the quarter and never seemed to lose it. The Pioneers went into the fourth quarter up 94-61.

The fast-paced play and high momentum deemed too much for the Yellow Jackets. Glenville State out-scored WVSU by a large margin in the last period of play.

The Yellow Jackets will play their first road game of the season at Concord on Sunday, Jan. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
