INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University's student-athletes combined for a term record 3.3 grade point average (GPA) when grades for the spring semester were posted on Thursday night. This marked the fourth consecutive semester that West Virginia State's student-athletes achieved a 3.1 GPA or higher. Additionally, a record 169-of-257 (66 percent) total student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or better.
"Challenging times have brought out the very best in our student-athletes," remarked Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator
Kerri Blackwell. "From having seasons cancelled to transitioning to online learning, our student-athletes have risen above the circumstances and proven that success is always an option.
"The culture is shifting. Student-athletes know that they are valued as students first by both faculty and staff. I am so proud of our coaches for making academics a top priority and elevating the student-athlete experience."
With every excuse available to underperform, WVSU student-athletes defied expectations and put together their best-ever academic semester. Ten out of the 11 varsity sports offered at West Virginia State fielded teams with 3.0 grade point averages or greater.
