CARY, N.C. – West Virginia State's effort to come back from down seven runs in the fourth inning came up just short, as they fell 10-8 to Jefferson on Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets scored eight runs in the failed comeback on a single by Austin Martin in the fifth, an error in the fifth, a double by Matthew Kline in the fifth, a home run by Antonio Brown in the sixth, a triple by Trey Junkins in the seventh, and a single by Jared Hunt in the seventh.
West Virginia State couldn't keep up with Jefferson early in the game. The Rams scored first on a single in the second inning and then added six more runs in fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets notched four runs in the fifth inning. Martin, Andrew Stone, and Kline each had RBIs in the big inning. Brown hit a solo homerun in the top of the sixth to bring his team back to within two runs of the Rams, 7-5.
Jefferson scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to go up by four. In the next half inning, Junkins tripled down the right field line to bring Stone and Kline home. Hunt then came up with an RBI-single to cut the deficit to one run, 9-8.
West Virginia State was kept off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings, while the Rams added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Patrick Hohlfeld earned the win for Jefferson. He went six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking zero. Jem Sisco, Brett Chupka, and Patrick McFarland all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the win. Sisco was credited with the save.
Nick Loftis took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out three.
West Virginia State tallied 11 hits in total. Cole Kiddy, Hunt, Martin, and Junkins all managed multiple hits for WVSU. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets didn't commit a single error in the field. Brett Christian had five chances in the field, the most on the team.
West Virginia State plays again tomorrow at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. The Yellow Jackets will take on Saint Rose at 9:30 a.m. before a 1 p.m. matchup with Dominican. Both games are slated for nine innings.
