West Virginia State defeated by Concord in tale of two halves, 103-77

ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team was bested by Concord, 103-77, on the road Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets led at halftime, 53-48, before being outscored, 55-24, in the second half.

West Virginia State falls to 9-18 overall, 7-14 in the Mountain East Conference with the loss. Meanwhile, Concord jumps to 19-8 on the season and 15-6 in the MEC with the win.

Sophomore forward Chloe Cheresne recorded a team-high 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. She shot 3-of-5 from three-point range. Fellow sophomore Sierra Womack posted an impressive stat line of 10 points, seven boards, six steals and three assists.

West Virginia State bossed the last four-and-a-half minutes of the first quarter by going on a 19-4 run. Cheresne started it off with a three-pointer and ended it with a buzzer-beating layup. The Yellow Jackets had a cozy 13-point lead, 31-18, at the conclusion of the first period.

In the second period, the Mountain Lions found their rhythm and put up 30 points to West Virginia State's 22 points. Regardless, the Yellow Jackets did enough to keep their lead going into halftime, 53-48.

The second half was an entirely different story from the first. West Virginia State shot an abysmal 22 percent from the floor while making 3-of-20 three-point attempts. The result was a total of 24 points in the latter half. On the other hand, Concord posted 27 points in the third period alone and followed it up with 28 points in the fourth period.

The Yellow Jackets have one more game left in the regular season. They will make the short trip across town to the University of Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 29 for a 2 p.m. tip.
