Women’s Basketball trounces Frostburg State, 93-65

MCHENRY, Md. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team convincingly defeated Frostburg State, 93-65, on the road Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets held the lead for all but five seconds of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.

With the win, WVSU progresses to 8-12 overall and 6-8 in the MEC. With the loss, FSU regresses to 3-17 on the season and 2-12 in league play.

Freshman forward Destiny Fields registered her third double-double of the season with a game-high 12 rebounds alongside 15 points. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Chloe Cheresne led all players in scoring with 18 points. Charity Shears and Madison Riley each reached double-digits in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

West Virginia State expeditiously jumped out to a 9-2 lead in less than two minutes following the opening tip. The momentum soon shifted as Frostburg State responded with a 7-2 run that brought the Bobcats back to within two points, 11-9, with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets then regained the momentum in the final three minutes of the first period with a 9-5 run that put them ahead by six points, 20-14.

West Virginia State pulled away from Frostburg State at the start of the second period by scoring 11 unanswered points in a minute. At the end of the impressive minute, WVSU gained a 31-17 advantage over FSU. The remainder of the first half was edged by the Bobcats, 18-15. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets went into halftime up by 11 points, 46-35.

West Virginia State reigned supreme in the third period, outscoring Frostburg State 32-21. The Yellow Jackets led by 22 points going into the fourth quarter, 78-56.

WVSU capped off its dominant performance by holding FSU to nine points in the final ten minutes. Additionally, West Virginia State scored 15 points in the fourth period to achieve a 28-point margin of victory.

The Yellow Jackets bested the Bobcats in nearly every statistical category. West Virginia State scored 24 points off turnovers compared to 11 points off turnovers by Frostburg State as one example.

WVSU returns home to play West Liberty (8-12, 4-10 MEC) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for its next game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
