Yellow Jackets surpassed by Fairmont State, 102-69

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team traveled to Fairmont State on Wednesday night and was defeated, 102-69 , in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) clash.

West Virginia State falls to 7-12 overall, 5-8 in the MEC with the defeat. Meanwhile, Fairmont State improves to 11-8 on the season, 8-5 in league play with the win.

Three Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits. Sophomore forward Chloe Cheresne picked up 19 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Teammates Charity Shears and Hannah Shriver also reached double-figures in scoring with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Fairmont State made 7-of-11 three-point attempts on the way to a 30-13 lead with a minute to go in the first quarter. West Virginia State managed to hit two shots from behind the arc in the final minute to cut the deficit to 11 points, 30-19, going into the second period.

The Yellow Jackets played the Flacons even for the first half minutes of the second quarter. WVSU trailed FSU by only 10 points, 46-36, with five minutes remaining until halftime. The Flacons ended the first half on a 10-3 run that gave them a 17-point advantage, 56-39, at the break.

Fairmont State carried its momentum over from the end of the second period into the third quarter. West Virginia State thus faced a 34-point deficit, 84-50, going into the fourth quarter.

WVSU finally got the better of FSU in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets outscored their opponents, 19-18.

West Virginia State had an off-night shooting the ball. WVSU shot 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from three-point range. On the contrary, Fairmont State shot 46 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range.

The Yellow Jackets hit the highway again for their next game on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Frostburg State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
