Volleyball finishes off Concord without reply, 3-0

ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team swept Concord, 3-0, for the second time this season when the teams squared off in Athens on Tuesday night.  This was the 11th occasion this year in which the Yellow Jackets swept an opponent.

With only four matches remaining in the regular season, West Virginia State (17-12, 9-3 MEC) currently stands to earn the No. 3 seed in the 2019 MEC Volleyball Tournament. Meanwhile, Concord (9-17, 4-8 MEC) clings to eighth place in the league standings after the loss.

On the perimeter, sophomore outside hitter Jenna Dufresne did not disappoint in her return from an injury. She registered a game-high 14 kills and a .600 hitting percentage while looking fully recovered. In the middle, fellow sophomore Gabrielle Thompson continued her recent tear by posting 10 kills, four block solos and one block assist on her way to a match-leading 14.5 points. In her role as setter, junior Brianna Brandt accounted for 33 assists in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets came out inspired in the first set, going up 12-4 after back-to-back kills by Thompson. Concord made an effort to get back in range, but Dufresne's fifth kill of the set ended it, 25-16.

The second set was a close affair up until the last few points. In fact, West Virginia State scored five unanswered points to claim it, 25-16. Once again, Dufresne ended it with her fifth kill of the set.

The Yellow Jackets attacked with absolute precision in the third set. They combined for a .500 hitting percentage with 16 kills and only three errors on 26 total attempts. Unsurprisingly, West Virginia State ran away with it, 25-12.

The Yellow Jackets recorded 45 kills and nine kills as a team. They limited their errors to just 13 on the night.

West Virginia State continues its road trip at Glenville State (4-20, 1-10 MEC) next. The match is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
