Yellow Jackets sweep Glenville State for second time this season, 3-0

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team swept Glenville State, 3-0, for the second time this season on Friday night. The 3-0 win marked the 12th instance in which the Yellow Jackets swept another team this year.

West Virginia State improves to 18-12 overall, 10-3 in the Mountain East Conference with the victory. Meanwhile, Glenville State drops to 4-21 on the season, 1-11 in league play with the defeat.

Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Dufresne led the Yellow Jackets in both kills (10) and digs (12).  Starring in the middle of the net, fellow sophomore Gabrielle Thompson slammed down nine kills on 12 total attempts with only one error for a .667 hitting percentage. On the defensive end, middle hitter J'Lana Stone posted a match-high seven blocks (six assisted/one solo).

Head Coach Kris Kern rotated in 17 of his players throughout the course of the match. As the contest progressed, his team attacked with increasing accuracy. The Yellow Jackets hit .128 in the first set, .226 in the second, and .421 in the third.

The first set was the only one that was really close. West Virginia State narrowly eclipsed the Pioneers, 25-23. The following two sets were dominated by the Yellow Jackets. They claimed the second set 25-13 before taking the third set easily, 25-15.

West Virginia State stifled Glenville State's attack for the entire match, holding the Pioneers to a combined -.009 hitting percentage. The Yellow Jackets registered 41 kills, 12 blocks, and three service aces to account for 56 of their points.

The Yellow Jackets travel to the University of Charleston (9-19, 4-8 MEC) next for an attempt to beat their rivals twice in one season. The MEC clash is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
