Volleyball trounces Central State in non-conference play, 3-0

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The West Virginia State University volleyball team traveled to Central State on Tuesday night and only needed 11 minutes past an hour to claim its tenth consecutive win. The Yellow Jackets have not been defeated since Sep. 21 against Union (Tenn.). Even more impressive, they only dropped three sets during the entire stretch. The other seven matches have been clean sweeps.

WVSU improves to 14-9 overall with the win, while CSU falls to 10-17 on the season with the loss. West Virginia State's perfect 7-0 record in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) still stands after the non-conference matchup.

In her two sets played, sophomore outside hitter Jenna Dufresne racked up eight kills, four service aces, and two block assists to total a match-high 13 points. Currently, she is second in the MEC only to Rebecca Feeney of Fairmont State in points with 288.5. Dufresne has a higher points-per-set average than Feeney at 3.95. Sophomore middle hitter J'Lana Stone continued her recent form and accounted for 10.5 points. She had eight kills, two block solos, and one block assist. Stone posted a .583 hitting percentage on 12 total attempts.

Each set in the match was dominated by the Yellow Jackets. They won the first set 25-11, the second set 25-14, and the third set 25-7. The Marauders led once when they scored the first point of the second set. West Virginia State was in complete control for the duration of the contest.

The Marauders beat themselves with 23 errors as a team and a combined -.147 hitting percentage throughout the three sets. On the other side of the net, the Yellow Jackets hit .375 and only committed 10 errors. WVSU recorded 12 service aces by the end of the match.

West Virginia State's toughest tests thus far are fast approaching. First, WVSU heads to West Liberty (12-11, 4-4 MEC) for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Oct. 25. Then, the Yellow Jackets remain in the northern panhandle to face No. 19 Wheeling (19-3, 7-0 MEC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Cardinals have never lost a conference game since they joined the MEC in 2013.
