INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball won their ninth consecutive game against Frostburg State, 3-0, on Saturday morning inside the Walker Convocation Center.
Head Coach Kris Kern reflected on his team's progression this season after the weekend's results were in:
"As a coach, you want to continuously improve over the course of a season and we're improving every week."
West Virginia State (13-9, 7-0 MEC) remains undefeated in the Mountain East Conference with the win. Meanwhile, Frostburg State (8-10, 1-6 MEC) drops to the second-to-last position in the conference standings with the loss.
Sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Bullock stepped into the lead attacking role and posted a game-high 13 kills. She recorded a .462 hitting percentage and added 12 digs to her stat sheet. Sophomore middle blocker Gabrielle Thompson was second-in-command with eight kills on nine total attempts. Second-year middle hitter J'Lana Stone was a wall in the center of the net with two block solos and three block assists.
"Stone and Thompson controlled the net Saturday," said Kern.
The first set was tight up until the score reached 12 all. After that, the Yellow Jackets ran away with it. They ended up winning it 25-16.
The Bobcats went up 4-1 to start the second set. West Virginia State then proceeded to go on a 24-6 run. WVSU scored eight straight points to close out the set, 25-10.
The Yellow Jackets claimed the third set by the same scoreline as the first, 25-16. This marked the seventh sweep of the season by WVSU.
Coach Kern had this to say about his players' performances in the recent matches:
"We played extremely hard all weekend. Grace, Trinity, and Devon were solid defensively. Jenna dominated Friday and Bullock dominated Saturday on the outside."
In Saturday's game versus Frostburg State, the Yellow Jackets tallied 20 more kills than their opponents and registered a .353 hitting percentage as a unit.
West Virginia State hits the road next for a non-conference matchup at Central State on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
