Yellow Jackets extend win streak to eight games by beating Fairmont State, 3-1

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team kept their winning streak alive by defeating Fairmont State, 3-1, on Friday night inside the Walker Convocation Center.

West Virginia State (12-9, 6-0 MEC) extended its win streak to eight games and kept its record in league-play unblemished with the victory. Meanwhile, Fairmont State (8-11, 1-5 MEC) remains in second-to-last place in the conference standings after the defeat.

The usual suspects led the way for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Dufresne posted a team-high 16 kills and added a service ace to account for 17 points. Junior setter Brianna Brandt registered a game-high 33 assists and made 13 digs. Additionally, sophomore defensive specialist Trinity Miller emerged from the pack with a season-high 18 digs.

The first set was a 29-27 thriller in which WVSU came out on top. Dufresne was responsible for the last two points with a kill and an attack that caused a ball handling error on the other side of the net.

The second set was another close one. The Falcons went up 21-20 before the Yellow Jackets scored the next five points to claim the set.

Down 2-0 in the match, Fairmont State finally picked up a set in the third by a score of 25-13.

West Virginia State had its best performance in the fourth set. A block by J'Lana Stone and Brianna Brandt ended it, 25-18.

As a team, WVSU made nine blocks compared to five by FSU. Most other team statistics were actually in favor of the losing side since the Falcons kept each set close and dominated in the third set.

The Yellow Jackets play at home again tomorrow against Frostburg State. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
