Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yellow Jackets Roll to Lead, Grind to Victory

The start of Thursday's nights game looked like the Yellow Jackets were going to post a textbook runaway win.

But while WVSU never trailed on the way to a 104-93 win over visiting Glenville State the Jackets were forced to work for the "W" down the stretch.

The final score marked the second game in a row WVSU has broken the century mark and the first time the Jackets have done it in back-to-back games in the Walker Convocation Center. WVSU is now 5-1 in games when they have scored at least 100 point since the building opened at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Thursday's game began like it might be a walk in the park. The Yellow Jackets were simply shooting better, running faster, fighting harder for rebounds, and playing better defense than the Pioneers.

An 18 point lead at 45-27 with 6:43 left to play in the first half looked like it could get bigger at any moment. WVSU hit 59 percent from the floor in the opening half and sank 7-of-15 3-point attempts.

Then Glenville decided to make a fight of it.

The Pioneers pulled to within 55-47 at halftime and got as close as four points at 80-76 with 6:37 to play.

Meanwhile the Jacket lead never grew above 12 points in the second half.

So a walk in the park ended up being a hard fought half.

"We played good in spurts but need to get consistent with our play," WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore said. "We have had our guys for seven games now and we are beginning to come together."

The Yellow Jackets were up to the task Thursday as they answered every Pioneer attempt to catch up with a clutch bucket of big defensive stop.

James Hagins tipped-in a miss on the offensive end and Frank Agyemang pulled down a rebound on the defensive end and Pat Johnson-Agwu followed with another offensive rebound and score to move the lead back to 10 points right after Glenville had cut it to six coming out of halftime.

When the Pioneers cut it to four points the Jackets answered with back-to-back dunks by Johnson-Agwu and Gus Stone sandwiched around a block by Jeremiah Moore on the defensive end.

No matter what direction the Pioneers tried to take there was a Yellow Jacket there to stop them.

Johnson-Agwu led WVSU with 30 points after finishing off the night with a windmill dunk in the closing seconds.

Stone added 20 points while Ernest Jenkins, Agyemang, and Moore each had 10.

Next up for WVSU is a 4 p.m. meeting Saturday in Buckhannon with West Virginia Wesleyan.

"Now we have to learn to win on the road," Poore said. "Wesleyan will be a tough task."
