The WVSU baseball team swept a doubleheader from previously unbeaten #4 Mercyhurst Friday at the American Baseball Classic in Wilson, North Carolina.
The Yellow Jackets took game one 5-2 and the nightcap 5-4.
"I'm really happy for our guys," WVSU Head Coach
Sean Loyd said. "They played under control and were able to get two wins against one of the best teams in the country."
Brandon Wright drove in three runs in the opener with
Trevor Sampson knocking in three in game two.
"The hitting is getting better each time we play," Loyd said.
WVSU was able to take advantage of the improvement at the plate because of some outstanding performances on the mound.
Senior
Colby Gainer, the reigning MEC Pitcher of the Week, fanned nine while allowing just three hits and two runs in seven innings.
Hunter Bradley allowed four hits and four runs in five innings to pick up the win in the second contest.
"Gainer and Bradley did an excellent job both games," Loyd said. "When you get good starting pitching it keeps you in the game."
Tyrel Panter recorded the final four outs to earn the save.
"The bullpen was good as well," Loyd said. "Panter was able to navigate through a high leverage situation."
WVSU improved to 6-3 while the a Lakers dropped To 6-2.
Saturday morning at 10 a.m. WVSU takes on Bloomsburg. The Yellow Jackets wrap up the weekend at 1 p.m. Sunday against Kutztown.
