The WVSU baseball team opened its conference season Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame at Calvin Bailey Field.
Game one went to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 4-3 and they followed that with a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind 2-0 after two innings in the opener. But they rallied to tie the game in the third with
Trevor Sampson's double down the right field line the big blow.
Trayvis Patterson blasted a two - run shot in the next inning to give WVSU the lead and all of the cushion the Jackets needed.
Colby Gainer scattered six hits over six innings while allowing just one earned run for the win and
Tyrel Panter tossed a perfect seventh to earn the save.
The second game went from a walk in the park to a barn burner quickly before ending in dramatic fashion.
WVSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings only to see the visitors tie it up in the sixth and take an 8-7 lead in the seventh.
It only took four batters for the Yellow Jackets to right the ship though in the bottom of the inning.
Trevor Sampson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a
Ryan McDonough sacrifice bunt.
Jared Hunt then belted his second triple of the game down the right field line to drive in Sampson and tie the score.
Matt Harrison then stepped to the plate and capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to bring home Hunt and the sweep.
Hunt drove in three runs on three hits while McDonough and Harrison each knocked in two runs.
Panter picked up the win in relief.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Monday as they host Urbana in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
