The Yellow Jackets shook off weeks of frustration, found their offensive rhythm and rolled to a 110-76 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the Mountain East Conference tournament Wednesday night.
Along the way the Yellow Jackets broke several MEC tournament records.
WVSU set a new mark for points scored in a game with 110, breaking West Liberty ' s record of 107, and field goal percentage at .646. Wheeling Jesuit held old record with .642.
The Yellow Jackets also broke single game tournament records for field goals made, margin of victory, and for steals.
Junior
Pat Johnson-Agwu set an individual single game tournament record for field goals made with 15.
"It was phenomenal," WVSU Head Coach
Bryan Poore said after the game. "It was the best game, total game, we've played all year."
WVSU came into the game with an eight game losing streak in tow. But before the game Jacket Poore said he felt like his team was ready to win.
"Even though our current streak is not positive," he said. "I think we have been playing pretty good."
Everything came together Wednesday night.
Against the helpless Bobcats every missed shot the Yellow Jackets had needed to fall over those last eight games did. The Yellow Jackets hit 71 percent from the floor in the first half and then refused to totally give into the law of averages in the second half hitting 61 percent.
Johnson-Agwu led WVSU with 32 points.
Named first team All - MEC Tuesday he played like all-world Wednesday hitting his first 10 shots and and 15-of-18 on the game.
He also pulled down six rebounds and made six steals.
Robert Fomby added 16 points and six rebounds, Jahlen Greene 15 points, and Glen Abram 12. Langston Cooke handed out 10 assists.
Next up for the Yellow Jackets is a 6 p.m. meeting Friday with top-seeded West Liberty in the tournament quarterfinals.
