Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Yellow Jacket Volleyball Team Upsets Charleston, Qualifies for MEC Tournament

Back in 2013, the year the Mountain East Conference was formed, every team played in the league's championship volleyball tournament.

The next year the conference began limiting the tournament to the top eight teams.

Since that time West Virginia State has not qualified for the event.

Until Tuesday night when WVSU defeated Charleston 3-0 to clinch a spot this season.

"That's as big as it gets," said Yellow Jacket Head Coach Kris Kern.

The Jackets (23-10, 8-6 in MEC) came into the match in seventh place.

They defeated the second place team, their biggest rival, on the road in dominating fashion to clinch a spot in the league championship tournament.

"Not bad for a night's work," Kern said. "This team has improved a whole lot."

The Golden Eagles won the first meeting of the teams 3-1 a couple of weeks ago in Institute.

WVSU led pretty much the whole night Tuesday taking the opening set 25-16. The next two were 25-20 and 25-23.

Gabrielle Bullock had 16 kills, Tabi Pontious 45 assists, and Kelsie Bossert 18 digs to lead the Yellow Jackets.

WVSU has two regular season matches remaining, both at home.

Concord comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. Friday contest followed Saturday at 1:00 p.m. by a match against the University of  Virginia at Wise.
