Volleyball Wins Pair, to Open MEC Play, Honor Cancer Victim Tonight

    The Yellow Jacket volleyball team opened a busy three day stretch Thursday by defeating Bluefield State 3-0 and Salem International 3-1.

    Friday night WVSU hosts UVa-Wise at 7 p.m. and then hits the court in Walker Convocation Center again Saturday at 5 p.m. to play Concord.

"It's huge to enter MEC play with confidence," first-year WVSU Coach Kris Kern said. "We need to get healthy to be at full strength but our players are playing hard and compeating."

Katie Cobb, a young girl fighting Hodgkins Lymphoma, will be honored at the Friday contest. There will be a silent auction featuring several great items, a 50-50 raffle, and more with all proceeds going to Katie and her family to help with the cost of treatments. Those attending are asked to wear something purple to show support.

Friday's match will be the conference opener for Kern's 7-5 squad.

      Sophomore Makala Cook and juniors Edwina Barnett and Mallory Rennard pace the attack with all three averaging about 2.3 kills per set. Freshman Tabi Pontious is averaging 7.04 assists per set and freshman Emma Fetch 3.69 digs. Fetch leads the Mountain East Conference in service aces per set and senior Allison Tumey is second in hitting percentage.

       Admission is free and everyone is urged to come out and support the team.
