Women Open Tournament Play Thursday, Ticket and Tournament Information

The WVSU women's basketball team steams into this week's Mountain East Conference tournament at the Charleston Civic Center after a pair of big wins last week earned the Yellow Jackets a first round bye.

WVSU (14-14 overall, 12-10 in MEC), seeded sixth, meets third seeded University of Virginia at Wise (20-10, 15-7) at 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets lost 94-91 at Wise back in November but evened the score with a 77-75 win last Thursday in Institute.

The winner will face the survivor from among #2 Wheeling Jesuit, #7 Shepherd, and #10 West Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals at 2:15 Saturday.

The Cardinals (22-6, 17-5) will be heavily favored to advance. WVSU handed Wheeling two of its five conference losses this season. The Yellow Jackets won 90-70 in early January in the Walker Convocation Center and 75-73 three weeks later in Wheeling.

Glenville State (24-4, 18-4) is the top seed.

The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets are led by junior Aurreshea Hines who is averaging 16.7 points and 5.3 assists and senior Shealyn Shafer, 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds. Also averaging in double-figures are Sydney Bates, 12.0, and Jasmine Davis, 10.5.
