Box Score The road had not been a friendly place for the WVSU women's basketball team this season with only two of the squad's nine victories coming away from the familiar confines of the Walker Convocation Center.
Thursday night the Yellow Jackets made a move to change that with a 75-73 win at MEC leader Wheeling Jesuit.
"We have to continue to play hard and get better at the basics," WVSU Head Coach
Charles Marshall said. "Today we took a big step in the right direction."
In the last meeting between the teams the Yellow Jackets pulled away to a 20-point win in Institute by dominating the fourth quarter after the game had been tight for three quarters.
This time it was a tug of war all night as the lead changed 13 times and the score was tied four times. The #25 Cardinals (15-4 overall, 10-3 in MEC) led by as many as six points early and WVSU (10-9, 8-5) surged to a seven point lead in the third period.
The Yellow Jackets led early in the final period but Wheeling Jesuit fought back this time to retake the lead with 4:05 to play.
Shealyn Shafer hit a free throw with 1:27 to play that tied the score at 70-70 to set up a dramatic finish.
Jasmine Davis pulled down a missed Cardinal layup and then hit a 3-pointer at the other end of the floor to moved WVSU ahead 73-70 with exactly 1:00 remaining.
After a Wheeling timeout the Cardinals missed a 3-pointer but captured the offensive rebound and hit a second attempt to make it 73-73 with 29 seconds to go.
Davis' shot with nine seconds to go just missed but
Sydney Bates was there for the rebound and made a quick move to get a shot up an in with five seconds left for the win.
Shafer intercepted the Wheeling Jesuit inbounds pass to make sure there was no last second shot.
Shea Hines paced WVSU with 17 points and five assists. Davis finished with 16 points and Bates 11 along with seven rebounds.

In the second game the Yellow Jacket men fell 104-70 to the #9 Cardinals.
Cody Morris had 13 points and Ernest Jenkins 10 to lead WVSU.
