The young WVSU men's basketball team finally got to see how it felt to be on the other side of a scenario it has become all too familiar with this season.
Saturday the Yellow Jackets gradually built a large lead then held off a late Concord rally to end a seven-game losing streak with a 90-88 victory.
"Our guys really needed to get a win," WVSU Head Coach
Bryan Poore said. "We have had a tough stretch and not been able to get over the hump."
The shorthanded Yellow Jackets scored the first five points of the game on a 3-pointer by
Tyrie Elliott and layup by
Terrance Jenkins and did not trail for the first 34-plus minutes.
WVSU took a 49-43 lead in halftime and widened that to as many as 18 at 76-58 with 9:49 left to play.
The Mountain Lions then went on a furious 21-2 run to take the lead for the first time in the contest at 79-78 with 5:38 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets'
Cody Morris answered with a 3-pointer a minute later.
Concord managed to tie the score a few seconds later but
Jayson Hankins sandwiched a tip-in and 3-pointer around a Mountain Lion missed 3-pointer to give WVSU a five-point edge with 2:25 showing.
The visitors had one more opportunity for the win or overtime in the closing seconds.
The Jackets' Ernie Jenkins converted 1-of-2 free throws and Concord called timeout with 12.6 seconds to play needing two pointstp tie or a 3-pointer to win..
But the Yellow Jackets played flawless defense in the final seconds forcing the Mountain Lions into an off balanced attempt from the left corner that was well short of the basket as the horn sounded.
"I was proud of our guys' composure after giving up an 18-lead and fighting back to get the win," said Poore.
Elliott hit 5-of-7 from 3-point range to lead WSVU with 15 points. Jenkins finished with 14, Hankins added 13 and Jae'von McClain 10.
Mohammed Camara contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.
WVSU played without starting point guard
Brent Bauer who was nursing an ankle he rolled in Thursday night's game this week.
The Yellow Jackets return to action next week with a game at Wheeling Jesuit Thursday night.
