Yellow Jackets Lose to Charleston

Box Score

The WVSU football team lost 26-7 Thursday night to intra-county rival University of Charleston at Laidley Field.

After the squads showed some early nerves and lost the ball on a fumble on each of their first possessions the Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead just over five minutes into the game when Matt Kinnick hit Akil Washington with a 10-yard scoring strike. The score capped an eight play, 82-yard drive with the big play a 61-yard catch and run from Kinnick to Quinton Gray.

Charleston kicked a field goal midway through the period and then pulled into the lead with a touchdown on the final play of the opening quarter.

The Golden Eagles kept the ball on the ground for most of the game rushing for 298 yards.

Juawan Etheredge picked up 127 yards on 20 carries to lead WVSU.

Kinnick returned to the starting lineup after missing last week's game due to an injury. He finished 14-34 for 184 yards, the touchdown to Washington and two interceptions.
