The Yellow Jackets make the short drive to Laidley Field tonight for a 7 p.m. meeting with Kanawha Valley rival Charleston in Mountain East Conference gridiron action.
It is a meeting between two teams in need of a victory as WVSU comes into the contest with a 1-2 record while the Golden Eagles are looking for their first win after starting 0-3.
Both also come in with questions to be answered at the quarterback position. Yellow Jacket starter
Matt Kinnick sat out last week's loss to West Virginia Wesleyan with an injury to his throwing hand. Meanwhile injuries have forced Charleston to use three different players under center this season.
Austin Hensley looked good in relief of Kinnick completing 23 of 37 pass attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Brent Grisel and Anthony Fontana did not fare as well for the Golden Eagles. Playing in place of starter Mason Olszewski they combined to complete just 9 of 27 passes and throw five interceptions in a loss to Glenville State.
Kinnick led the MEC in passing yards per game last season while Olszewski was 27-of-47 for 311 yards in Charleston's first two games.
Both may return to action tonight.
Regardless the contest could easily turn into a run versus pass affair with the Golden Eagles currently second in the conference averaging 171.3 yards per game on the ground while the Yellow Jackets are second in passing yards with 310 per outing. Defensively the teams are not far apart as WVSU is allowing 376 yards a game and Charleston 397.3.
