Jacket Women Win Conference Opener, Men's Rally Falls Short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellow Jacket women's basketball team trailed by as many as 14 points in the first quarter, fought back to tie the game at halftime, managed to eke out a one-point lead after three then pulled away for a 100-87 win at Concord Saturday afternoon.

"We came out kind of flat" Head Coach Charles Marshall said. "We just weren't ready to play."

Mostly that is.

Senior Rachel Ward had her best night of the young season finishing with 21 points.

"Rachel was ready from the get go," Marshall said. "She showed a lot of heart and senior leadership."

A Concord 3-pointer with 7:38 to play gave the home team its last lead of the day at 78-76.

Ward ansered eight seconds later with a 3-pointer of her own to regain the lead for the Yellow Jackets and then drove for a layup shortly after that and WVSU was off to the races.

"We just made more plays at the end than they did," Marshall said. "I was proud of the effort, they hung in there and didn't quit."

In spite of a furious rally that saw the Yellow Jacket men score 50 points over the final 11 minutes and cut a 31 point deficit to six with 20 seconds to play Concord held on to defeat WVSU 92-82 in the second game.

Brent Bauer led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points, 16 in the second half.
