Box Score The Yellow Jackets fell behind in the two opening sets before coming on to close the margin in each and then nearly kept the match going with a valiant third set effort before falling 3-0 to visiting University of Charleston Tuesday night in the Walker Convocation Center.
The visitors jumped out to a quick 12-1 lead in the opening set but WVSU fought back to take 9-of-14 points before falling 25-15.
In set two the Golden Eagles went ahead 8-1 before the Jackets began to slowly fight their way back. But trading points was not enough and the visitors came up with one final spurt to take the set 25-13.
Charleston tallied the first point of set three but the Yellow Jackets were determined not to fall behind early again.
They took the next two points on kills by
Rebekah Baldwin and
Samantha Scripter and the fight was on.
The lead went back and forth the remainder of the match with the last advantage for WVSU coming at 21-20.
But the Yellow Jackets could manage just one more kill from
Edwina Barnett the rest of the way in dropping the set 25-22.
In all there were six lead changes and 13 ties in the final set.
Baldwin paced the WVSU attack with 10 kills followed by Barnett with six.
Mallory Rennard ended up with 13 assists and
Allison Tumey 12 while
Brooke Cieslewski came up with 16 digs.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Friday night at 7 p.m. when Concord visits.
