Jacket Women Suffer Last Minute Loss

Box Score

There was plenty of excitement in Sunday's final game of the Wingate MEC-PSAC Conference Challenge at the Walker Convocation Center as WVSU and Edinboro battled it out down to the proverbial wire.

The contest included nine ties and 10 lead changes.

Unfortunately the Yellow Jackets (1-1) needed one more of the latter in the final seconds but could not come up with the big bucket down the stretch as WVSU fell 55-51 to Edinboro.

Junior Shealyn Shafer hit a layup off an Alexus Hobbs pass with 3:51 left in the game to give the Yellow Jackets a 49-48 advantage.

A couple of minutes later, after the teams combined for seven missed shots and two turnovers, Laura Szorenyi hit a pair of free throws to stretch that to 51-48 with 1:13 remaining.

WVSU would not score again though committing two turnovers and missing a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch.

Meanwhile the Fighting Scots (2-0) hit back-to-back buckets in teh paint and converted their free throws to score the final seven points of the game.

Shea Hines led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points with Szorenyi adding 14. Shafer pulled down a game high 18 rebounds.

Next up WVSU travels to Virginia Union for a 5:30 p.m. game on Wednesday. Next Saturday the Yellow Jackets host Concord at 2 p.m.
