Box Score The WVSU football team rallied from a 16-7 deficit entering the fourth quarter to pull to within 16-13 with 11:14 to play but a blocked extra point the margin at three.
After forcing UVa-Wise to punt on its next possession the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 32 with 8:38 remaining.
The Jackets drove 59 yards on 11 plays, eating up 4:59 on the clock, but a game-tying field goal attempt was just wide left.
The Cavaliers were then able to run out the clock and hold on to the win.
"We worked ourselves into a position to win with that (touchdown) but didn't get it done," WVSU Head Coach
Jon Anderson said. "We needed to execute and we needed to produce and we didn't and we need to find a way to do that."
The Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard run by quarterback
Matt Kinnick with 2:33 to go in the opening period.
Wise tied the score at the 11:21 mark of the second quarter on a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line that capped a 14-play, 81-yard drive.
The Cavaliers took a 10-7 lead into halftime courtesy of a 21-yard field goal at the end of a 79-yard drive just before the break.
The lead went to 16-7 when a Cavalier defender stepped in from of a Kinnick pass and ran it back 21 yardslate in the third period.
Will Merritt blocked the extra point attempt to keep the margin at nine.
Mitchell Rowell paced the WVSU defense with 15 tackles,
Wenly Beliard added 11, and Merritt 10.
Kevin Coffie broke up three passes and the Jacket defense six in all as it held Wise to just 12-of-31 passing.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Notre Dame College next Saturday.
