Visiting Urbana Puts Damper on Homecoming

Box Score

Visiting Urbana University played Homecoming spoiler defeating the Yellow Jackets 62-10 in the first meeting between the schools on the gridiron.

Senior pre-season All-American quarterback D.J. Mendenhall threw for six touchdowns to pace the Blue Knights (4-2 overall, 4-1 in MEC).

The WVSU offense came to life in the second half picking up 233 yards. The Yellow Jackets hit paydirt with 8:56 to play in the third period on a 32 yard strike from Tyler Seals to Shanin Bennefield.

"We just challenged our kids to put out a great effort," WVSU Head Coach Jon Anderson said. "I wanted to see who would continue to play and I was proud of our guys."

The Yellow Jackets picked up 11 first downs after the break and put together drives of 71 and 74 yards.

"It was just a matter of winning individual match-ups," Anderson said. "The linemen in protection, the quarterback making the throw, and the receiver beating his man, and we started seeing some success."

Freshman Josh Reuber connected on the longest field goal of his career when he split the uprights from 45 yards away with 9:23 to play to account for the remainder of the Jackets' scoring.

"We're growing up and we're taking some lumps along the way," Anderson said. "It's a continuing process."

Sophomore Romell Haley picked off his fourth pass of the season to remain tied for the Mountain East Conference lead in that category.

Seals finished with 169 yards passing, his highest total since throwing for 206 in the opening game. Backup red-shirt freshman quarterback Devon Dorsey came in and threw for 44 yards and ran for a team high 23 yards.
