Box Score        The West Virginia State football season started out in grand fashion Saturday afternoon at Johnson C. Smith only to end in defeat.

Quarterback Ricky Phillips (at left from last year) hit a streaking Ervin Kent for a 74-yard scoring strike just 55 seconds into the season opener in Charlotte.

The host Golden Bulls (1-0) responded with a pair of scores themselves but the Yellow Jackets (0-1)answered when LeFloyd Phillips scampered 25 yards to paydirt with seven minutes left in the opening quarter to knot the score at 14-14.

The JC Smith offense took control after that though reeling off three straight touchdowns before halftime to take a 34-14 advantage to the lockerroom.

Aided by four WVSU turnovers the Golden Bulls continued to run wild finishing with 630 yards of total offense.

Phillips led Yellow Jacket rushers with 65 yards while throwing for 345 to account for 410 of the team's 499 total yards.

He hooked up with Kent again, this time on a 48 yard touchdown throw, and scrambled 31 yards for another as WSVU found the endzone twice more in the second half.

Kent caught four passes for 147 yards and senior Landon Johnson hauled in eight receptions for 98 yards as Phillips completed 23-of-44 passes.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets they host Virginia State Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lakin Field in Institute.
