David Smith


     David Smith took over the WVSU women’s basketball program prior to the 2012-2013 season.
     A veteran coach with over 30 years of experience Coach Smith has been highly successful throughout his career and picked up his 600th win  on January 24, 2014. 
    With 607 wins going into the 2014-15 season rank Coach Smith 26th among women’s basketball coaches in all divisions, 10th all-time among NCAA Division II coaches, and fifth among active Division II coaches.
     His arrival quickly made an impact as in just his second season in Institute he led the Yellow Jackets to the second most wins in program history and a conference tournament semifinal appearance.
     Prior to coming to WVSU he spent the previous 14 years at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., where he posted a record of 249-156 and led the Knights to six NCAA tournament appearances.
     Previously he served as head coach at Shippensburg University and St. Joseph’s College.
     In 1996 he led Shippensburg to a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament. Altogether, Smith has taken squads to the NCAA tournament 14 times.
     Smith and his wife, Marla, have been married 46 years. He has a son, Scottie, who is also a college women's basketball coach, and a daughter, Pepper, a nurse, who lives in Shippensburg.
