West Virginia State University Athletic Director
Nate Burton announced
Nip Anderson as the Interim Head Softball Coach on July 28, 2020. Anderson joined the WVSU softball coaching staff in 2004 as an assistant coach and remained with the program ever since.
"Nip has been a part of our softball program for nearly 20 years and has played an integral role in building and maintaining a successful program," stated Burton. "We have great confidence that he will continue the positive momentum we have experienced over the last few years."
Anderson brings a total of 20 years of experience in coaching at the collegiate level to the table with his appointment as Interim Head Coach at West Virginia State. In addition to the 17 years that he's been at WVSU, Anderson had a three-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Charleston under then Head Softball Coach Karen Pauley.
Anderson was a member of coaching staffs at West Virginia State that won two WVIAC Tournament Championships, a Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship, and a MEC Regular Season Title. The Yellow Jackets won their first WVIAC Softball Championship after defeating West Virginia Wesleyan, 5-4, back in 2008. The next WVIAC Softball Championship came in 2013 when WVSU defeated Fairmont State, 4-1, in a winner-take-all second round game. More recently, West Virginia State captured its first MEC Tournament Championship in 2018 and followed it up with its first MEC Regular Season Title in 2019.
Prior to moving up to the collegiate ranks, Anderson was a successful little league softball coach. He coached various age groups to 10 State Championships in just 11 seasons. He also coached the first softball team from the state of West Virginia to qualify for the Little League World Series.
