Coach Hicks graduated from DuPont High School where he was an All-County selection at shortstop his junior and senior seasons. He went on to play junior college baseball in Arizona and two years at Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston. Later he earned a degree in Special Education from West Virginia State University and Master’s Degree in Behavioral Disorders from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.
Before becoming a very successful coach at the high school level, Hicks spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant for the Yellow Jackets under former coach Cal Bailey. After that he coached at George Washington High School for a season followed by a long stint at Hurricane High School from 1996 to 2008.
He led the Redskins to over 300 wins including a state runner-up finish in 1999 and a Class AAA state championship in 2002.
