Biography
West Virginia State University Athletics Hall of Fame member Calvin Bailey took over the helm of the baseball program at his alma mater in 1978.
Under his leadership the Yellow Jackets have won 17 conference championships.
The recognized dean of WVIAC baseball bosses has averaged over 30 wins a season since 1990. For his many accomplishments, the college named the school's first class baseball facility in his honor, Calvin L. Bailey Field.
The Newton, West Virginia native and graduate of Spencer High School lettered in both football and baseball while earning his undergraduate degree in Institute.
Named to the All-WVIAC baseball team in 1966, Bailey jumped at the opportunity to play professionally, inking a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization at the conclusion of that season.
Upon his retirement from pro baseball, Bailey returned to the friendly surroundings of his college days. He was hired in the school admissions office and took classes at WV College of Graduate Studies, earning his master's degree in 1974.
He took over the coaching reins in the spring of 1978. From that point to present, WINNING and WV STATE have become synonymous. Bailey has been named WVIAC "Coach of the Year" on eight occasions and was selected West Virginia "College Coach of the Year" in 1982. In 1999 and 2005 he was also voted North Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.
He guided the Jackets to the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional Championship and a trip to the NCAA DII World Series in 1999 where they finished 3rd in the World Series and also garnered a 3rd place finish in the final NCAA Division II Baseball Poll and In 2005 Bailey's squad captured its second.
North Atlantic Regional title and advance to the NCAA Division II World Series in Montgomery, Alabama. The Jackets finished 5th there and also in the final national coaches' poll.
Bailey is married to the former Ruth Fisher, a 1967 WVSU graduate and former cheerleader, they reside in Cross Lanes and are the proud parents of two children, Danny, and Janna, and have four grandchildren.
In his spare time, Bailey is an avid hunter and farmer. In 2002, Calvin was named Kanawha County Farmer of the Year.
