8-Inning Heartbreaker Causes Split with Wheeling

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State split a doubleheader with Wheeling on Sunday at Lady Jackets Field, taking the opener behind a strong offensive showing before dropping a tightly contested extra-inning nightcap.

In Game 1, West Virginia State used a pair of big innings to secure a 6-4 victory. After falling behind early on a two-run homer in the second, the Yellow Jackets responded immediately with three runs of their own, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Erica Sigmon and an RBI single from Autumn Hall to take control. WVSU added three more runs in the fourth inning, with Kylie Price and Cassidy Cummings each delivering RBI doubles to extend the lead. Kaleigh Murphy went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs while scattering seven hits to earn the win, as the Yellow Jackets totaled 12 hits in the opener.

In Game 2, West Virginia State battled but came up short in an 8-inning, 7-5 loss. The Yellow Jackets jumped out early with two runs in the first and added key runs in the fourth and fifth innings, briefly taking a 5-4 lead after manufacturing runs with situational hitting, including a sacrifice fly and RBI single from Chloe Treadway. However, Wheeling responded with a solo home run in the seventh to tie the game before plating two runs in the eighth to pull ahead. Despite collecting 12 hits, including multi-hit performances from several players, WVSU was unable to capitalize late as Wheeling closed it out in the bottom half.
