INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State women's basketball (5-6, 2-3 MEC) used a balanced offensive attack and sustained defensive pressure to secure a 78–67 Mountain East Conference victory over the Point Park Pioneers (3-9, 1-7 MEC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Walker Convocation Center.
The Yellow Jackets gradually built separation after a tight opening quarter, before outscoring the Pioneers 27–17 in the second period, shooting an unconcsious 70.6 percent from the field in the frame to take a 42–30 lead into halftime. West Virginia State capitalized on points in the paint and second-chance opportunities, converting 17 offensive rebounds into consistent interior scoring throughout the afternoon.
West Virginia State Yellow Jackets maintained control coming out of the break, pushing the margin to double digits during the third quarter behind efficient finishing at the rim and timely perimeter shooting. The Jackets matched Point Park's pace in the final period to preserve the advantage and close out the conference win.
Baylee Goins led all scorers with a career-high 35 points, a total that ranks as the seventh-most in a single game in West Virginia State history. She eclipsed her previous career high of 29 set earlier this season at Glenville State and also established new career bests in field goals made and three-pointers, surpassing her prior marks of 11 field goals against Glenville State and five three-pointers versus Bluefield State. Her eight rebounds also topped her previous high of seven against Frostburg State.
Latisha Parris added a season-best 24 points for West Virginia State and contributed seven rebounds, four steals and a full 40-minute effort.
Ahjanae Young chipped in seven points and seven rebounds, while
Tiir Nyok provided six points, four rebounds and three blocks in the paint.
West Virginia State finished the game shooting 29-of-74 from the field and held a 42–38 rebounding edge, including a 17–10 advantage on the offensive glass. The Jackets also forced 22 turnovers, converting those miscues into 20 points.
Point Park was paced by Camille Fultz with 18 points and five assists, while Elizabeth Boyd added 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Pioneers shot 24-of-55 from the floor but were unable to overcome West Virginia State's sustained interior pressure and transition scoring.
