WVSU Baseball Sweeps First-Place Concord to Tighten MEC South Race

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State completed their sweep of first place teams in the Mountain East standings with their sweep of Concord on Saturday by finals of 14-7 and 7-6. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of seven total miscues by the Mountain Lions over the two games and turned four total double plays at crucial times. The Yellow Jackets have turned 31 double plays this season, tied with West Liberty for the most in the MEC.

The Yellow Jackets swept MEC north leader Point Park back on March 30.

Game One: WVSU 14, Concord 7
The Yellow Jackets erased an early 7-3 deficit with 11 unanswered runs across the next four innings. After Concord used three home runs to take control in the first three innings—including two from Tyson Burke and a three-run third—WVSU responded with a four-run third inning, capitalizing on a hit batter, an error, and a two-run single by Michael Bittinger. In the fourth, Charlie McGuiness delivered a three-run home run to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 10-7. State then added four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Kyle Waters' bases-clearing triple and an RBI single from Bittinger.

Michael Bittinger added a 3-for-5 performance with four RBIs, while McGuiness homered and drove in three runs. Connor Fizer went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Tyler Overaitis finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ethan Spolarich and Aidan Paulsen each added a hit and scored twice. On the mound, Jared Nethercut earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits and striking out two and improving to 4-1 on the season. WVSU totaled 14 hits and turned two double plays in the field.

Game Two: WVSU 7, Concord 6 (8 innings)
The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 4-1 deficit, tying the game in the fifth on a two-run homer by Nathan Paulsen, then taking the lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by Aidan Paulsen. A Concord run in the seventh forced extra innings, but Aidan Paulsen led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and later scored the winning run on Brodie Guenther's walk-off sacrifice fly. Cam Reed threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief.

West Virginia State was led offensively by Aidan Paulsen, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth.
