Institute, W. Va. -- West Virginia State split a doubleheader at Frostburg State on Sunday, taking the opener 7-3 before dropping the second game 7-1 at Bob Wells Field.
In Game 1, WVSU used a 13-hit offense and a solid outing from reliever
JT Fabian to secure the win. After falling behind 3-0 through two innings, the Yellow Jackets responded with two runs in the third and took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning, capped by a two-run home run from Nate Paulsen.
Fabian earned the win after tossing five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout and five walks.
Brodie Guenther went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Mason Bittinger added three hits, a stolen base, and an RBI. Paulsen drove in four runs.
In the nightcap, WVSU managed just two hits and was limited to one run, which came on a fifth-inning sacrifice bunt by
Ethan Spolarich. Frostburg State (13-7) scored twice in the first inning and added four more in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Starter
Brodie Guenther took the loss after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. The Yellow Jackets struck out 11 times against Frostburg's starter Bauer, who threw a complete game to improve to 4-1.
