INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- There was no shortage of the dramatic inside the Walker Convocation Center for Wednesday Night's Mountain East Conference matchup between West Virginia State and Frostburg State. After falling behind by 16 at the onset of the third period, WVSU steadily climbed back before putting together a 9-0 run to tie the game at 73. Frostburg State retook the lead with 3.5 seconds to play before
Shanley Woods hit a runnng floater as time expired to send the game to overtime. State dominated the extra period, outscoring the Bobcats 13-4 in the extra five minutes.
WVSU picks up just their third win inside the Walker Center this year and imrpoves to 9-11, 5-9 in the Mountain East. Frostburg State falls to 12-9, 7-7 in conference play.
Emyah Fortenberry collected 11 rebounds, making her the first Yellow Jacket women's basketball player to ever grab 1000 career rebounds. She ended the night with 11 points to go with her rebounds.
Shanley Woods shot 8-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-9 from deep, scoring 23 points.
Baylee Goins also contributed 12 points to the cause.
MEC leading scorer Emilee Weakley was hounded all night by the WVSU defense and she drew 10 fouls against Yellow Jacket players, compared to 12 against the rest of the team. However, the defense frustrated her late the 46 percent shooter was just 1-of-7 from the field in the final 15 minutes of the game. She ended up still leading all scorers with 25 points and 12 boards, just shy of her 27.6 points per game average.
Frostburg State took an early lead, capitalizing on fast-break opportunities and scoring in the paint. Hallie Bailey got State on the board with a jumper and a layup, but the Bobcats responded with a 9-2 run. Woods hit a three late in the period, and Goins added a jumper to cut into the deficit. Despite forcing multiple turnovers, State struggled from the field, shooting 5-for-23. At the end of the first, Frostburg led 23-11, with State looking to gain momentum.
State found more success offensively in the second quarter, led by Goins and Bailey from beyond the arc. Latisha Parris sparked the team early with a jumper and a fast-break layup off a steal. Woods and Emily Anthony each added key baskets to keep the offense moving. Frostburg continued to find points in the paint and at the free-throw line, but State capitalized on turnovers, converting them into fast-break opportunities. Goins knocked down two threes late in the quarter, and Bailey added another to help close the gap. At halftime, Frostburg led 46-33, but State built momentum heading into the break.
State came out strong in the third quarter, cutting into Frostburg's lead behind key baskets from Woods and Fortenberry. Woods hit back-to-back threes to spark the offense, while Fortenberry and Goins capitalized on fast-break opportunities. Defensively, State forced turnovers and converted them into points, holding Frostburg to limited fast-break opportunities. Ahjanae Young hit two late three-pointers to keep the momentum going, but Frostburg remained efficient inside and at the free-throw line. At the end of the third, Frostburg led 67-55, but State continued to gain ground heading into the final period.
In the fourth, WVSU struggled offensively, missing multiple shots, while FSU added a layup from Taylor Smith at 8:21 to extend their lead to 69-55. However, a defensive steal by Latifat Olatunji led to a transition layup with 6:56 on the clock, sparking momentum for WVSU. State then forced multiple FSU turnovers, capitalizing with back-to-back layups from Fortenberry at 6:19 and 5:44 and a fast-break score by Russell at 5:31, bringing the game within single digits at 71-63.
WVSU exploded in the waning moments of the period, going on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 73-all with Emily Anthony hitting a fast break-layup with 34.6 showing. A missed layup by Weakley and a Fortenberry rebound at 13.2 (which was her 1000th) appeared to give State the final possession, but a turnover by Anthony gave Frostburg State the ball back with 7.7. WVSU fouled with 3.5 showing and Frostburg's Alanna Tate canned both shots. A timeout for Charles Marshall's squad set the stage for Woods's heroics as she hit the running floater as time expired to force overtime.
In overtime, Frostburg jumped out to an initial lead, but another Woods trey gave State the lead for good with 3:02 to play in the extra frame, 78-77. Another 10-2 run over the next three minutes for West Virginia State sealed the comeback win, 88-79.
State travels to Fairmont to take on nationally ranked No. 24 Fairmont State on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 2:00.
